Years ago, stepping into the technical side of the film industry as a woman was like venturing into uncharted waters. It feels like eons ago—sometimes I joke that I’m ancient just thinking about it! But, when I look back, I realize how amazing the journey has been.
Back then, the numbers spoke for themselves. In the early 2000s, women made up only about 5% of the technical roles in the film industry. Whether it was working in sound, camera, or editing, the landscape was overwhelmingly male-dominated. It was a time when seeing a woman on the technical side of a film set was still a rarity. Today, the numbers have improved, but back then, every woman who chose this path was a pioneer in her own right.
Despite the challenges, my experience has been overwhelmingly positive. I’ve been fortunate to encounter kindness and respect from every department I’ve worked with. Whether it was collaborating with grips, working alongside electricians, or engaging with directors, I was met with love and support. I’ve always believed that the energy you bring to your work is what you get in return. By initiating with respect and a genuine passion for the craft, I found myself surrounded by people who reciprocated those values. The technical side of filmmaking can be tough, but it’s also deeply rewarding. My journey has been shaped by the relationships I’ve built, the skills I’ve honed, and the challenges I’ve overcome. I’ve learned that when you approach your work with kindness and determination, the industry, in turn, reflects that back to you.
To all the women out there who are working or aspiring to work in the film industry, know that your journey will be unique and filled with its own set of experiences. The road may not always be easy, but it’s a path worth taking. The energy you put into your work matters, and it will come back to you in ways you might never expect.
Here's to all the women who’ve blazed trails before us and to those who continue to push boundaries today. Our stories, our work, and our presence are shaping the future of this incredible industry, one step at a time. on 20 Years as a Woman in the Technical Side of Filmmakin
